Shikimic acid is found in the dried ripe fruits of aniseed, a magnoliaceae plant.Shikimic acid is roche's key ingredient in tamiflu. The shikimic acid currently used by Roche is extracted from anise. The synthesis of shikimic acid from petrochemical materials is complicated and has no value in production and application except for scientific research.

Shikimic acid has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by affecting arachidonic acid metabolism, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and inhibiting arteriovenous thrombosis and cerebral thrombosis. Shikimic acid can also be used as an intermediate of antiviral and anticancer drugs, and has the effect of preventing avian flu drugs "Tamiflu" and "tamiflu".

1. Naturally occurring (-)-form is a major biosynthetic precursor of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan and hence of the majority of plant alkaloids. It is also involved in the biosynthesis of lignin, flavonpids and other important aromatic compounds.

2. Shikimic acid has been used as a standard for the quantification of shikimate in apical parts of roots. It has also been used as a substrate in shikimate kinase assay.
